Music Good for the Spirit

Seven Bar's vision statement is "growing stronger minds, stronger bodies and stronger spirits together"  Last Friday our parents and students were treated to a great lift in spirits with the musical performance from our students.  They shared a variety of musical numbers to demonstrate what they had learned in music.  Thanks to our music teachers for the wonderful experience.  Thanks to all of you who attended and thanks to our talented students.  Enjoy a short clip.

5th Graders Go to Mars

Have you heard of Mars Mission?  It's a wonderful opportunity for students to learn to work in teams, learn scientific principles, apply real world skills in a simulated setting, and have fun doing it.

Thanks to our national labs here in Abq., students have the opportunity to create colonies, build a 12 x 12 space pod that is fully inflatable and then link up with other colonies on Mars.  I enjoyed watching it all unfold.  Here's some photos.  I hope you enjoy it too.

5th Grade Colonial Days

Our fifth graders have been studying the first 13 colonies as part of their social studies curriculum.  They celebrated the completion of the unit with colonial days today.  Parents came and watched an authentic colonial dance, ate some cornbread and beef jerky among other colonial foods, saw exhibits of student made artifacts and reports on the colonies and generally helped our students celebrate their learning.  Take a look at the dance.

Whose Cookie Jar is Growing Fastest?

Student excitement is growing along with the cookie jars on the library window as classes compete for ice cream to go with their cookies.  Each cookie jar represents a grade level.  The cookie jar that reaches the ceiling first gets ice cream on their play day.  How do we collect cookies in the jar?  By reading books, of course.  Who will win?  We'll find out tomorrow!!

Robotics Team Rocks

Congratulations to our Wrangler Robotics teams.  They had an outstanding showing at the mini-rave at Puesta del Sol on Saturday.  Our teams took 1st and 3rd place.

In case you’re wondering what robotics is – it’s a group of boys and girls who meet with parent volunteers after school to learn about robots, technology, and science.  They work toward a goal of building a robot with specific parameters and then compete with other teams.

Way to go Wrangler Robotics Team!!

Testing

Image001

Three more days of testing to go.  Students and teachers alike will be relieved to get back to a normal routine.  Thanks to all for helping out—especially our cafeteria staff for serving about 35o extra breakfast a day, to our PTA for providing testing parties for our students after the tests are over, for our teachers who teach the children all the knowledge and skills, to our support staff for assisting with the tests, to our office staff for keeping disruptions to a minimum, to our parents who are supportive and encouraging,  and to our students for trying their very best to show what they know.

One Cookie at A Time

Image001

No, I’m not talking about Girl Scout cookies, although that is good advice.  I know I can eat a whole tube of thin mints in one sitting.

I am talking about our new marquee.  If you remember, we promised that our cookie dough sales would be used to pay for a new electronic marquee.  I hope you have seen it.  It’s hard to miss.

So a BIG thank you.  You paid for our marquee, one cookie at a time.

We hope our marquee helps you keep track of events and activities to keep you in the know about school.

Student Led Conferences

Image001

The past couple of days I have attended several conferences.  Each time I go to a class, the student is reporting how they are doing in math or reading, what they need to work on, and in what areas they are doing well.  They have set goals and shared whether they have accomplished those goals.  When I think back on my school career, I was not able to discuss in detail my achievements and goals.  I’m in awe of our students when I attend the conferences each fall and spring.  Way to go!!

Heroes in our Midst

Image001

I don’t know if you all caught the news last week, but we have some heroes in our midst.  Last week the driver on one of our school buses had a medical emergency and the bus didn’t stop at the stop, but kept going.  The parent, Rhonda Carlsen, was able to jump on the bus and stop it, after a 3rd grade student named Randy opened the doors for her.  She and Randy were able to prevent a potentially big accident thanks to their alertness and quick thinking.

One of the things Rhonda told me is the students were all calm and did what we told them to in the middle of the emergency.  Way to go, Seven Bar Wranglers!!  You wrangled the bus to safety!!!
